Stocked Parts
Sunnyside's housing stock centers on 1966, which puts a lot of these garages a decade or more ahead of the newer tracts that make up the rest of the Clovis service area. Doors from that era were lighter steel, often single-layer, hung on extension spring systems with two cable drums instead of the torsion setups that came standard later. The cable gauge and drum size on these older extension systems aren't always what's in a generic parts kit, so we carry both standard and the older extension-style cable and drums on the truck before we head out. If a door's been modified over the decades - a spring conversion, a replacement track - we check what's actually on the door once we're there rather than assuming it matches the build year.We also stock the fittings for newer doors, since not every Sunnyside garage still runs original hardware. Some have been upgraded to torsion systems at some point in the last 50-plus years. Either way, we don't want to be guessing on-site what size cable a 1966-era drum needs.
What the Repair Takes
A snapped cable on an extension spring door is a different job than the same failure on a torsion system, and that distinction matters more in Sunnyside than in the newer sections of the service area because so much of the stock here is pre-1970. On extension setups, both cables usually get replaced together even if only one failed, since the surviving one is carrying the same age and the same wear. We also check the pulleys and the drum itself for grooving, since a worn drum will cut through a new cable fast. On a torsion system, the job is pulling the drum, unwinding the spring safely, and re-cabling under tension - not something to do without the right bars and clamps. Either way, we're coming from Clovis, about 7 miles out, so we bring the full kit rather than making a return trip for a part we didn't expect to need.
What You Pay
We don't have a flat number to quote here since cable repair cost depends on whether it's a one-cable or two-cable job, extension or torsion hardware, and whether the drums or pulleys need replacing along with the cable itself. Sunnyside's median household income runs noticeably higher than the broader service area average, but that doesn't change what the repair costs - parts and labor price the same whether the house is in Sunnyside or anywhere else we drive to. What does change the price is what's actually failed on the door, which we won't know for certain until we're standing in front of it. One honest limit: if the drums are rusted through or the track is badly bent from the cable failure, patching just the cable isn't worth it, and we'll tell you that instead of selling a repair that won't hold.
